What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are medical devices that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to act as the roots for missing teeth. When a patient comes in with one or more missing teeth, dental implants can provide the appearance and function of natural teeth.
Made of titanium metal, a dental implant is inserted into the jawbone to replace the tooth root. Once placed, an artificial tooth is attached to the implant and is anchored in place. Because the titanium metal fuses with the bone, the implant placement won't slip, make noise, or cause damage to the surrounding bone and gum tissue.
An alternative solution to conventional dentures and bridgework that require natural tooth roots, dental implants offer natural, durable results.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Typically, patients who are healthy enough to undergo a tooth extraction are great candidates for dental implants. However, patients with certain conditions or lifestyles, such as chronic diseases, heavy smoking, etc. should have a thorough evaluation with one of our dentists.
The Dental Implant Process
The process requires a dental implant (titanium screw) and a tooth replacement.
Your dentist will begin by surgically placing the implant into your jawbone below the gum tissue. As the tissue heals, the implant bonds with the bone and attaches to the gums.
Once the healing is complete, generally four to six months post-surgery, patients return to our office to complete the process.
At this final appointment, your dentist will attach a tooth replacement, such as a dental crown, bridge or denture, to the implant to create the look and function of a natural tooth.
