Dental Sedation in Surrey, BC
What is Sedation Dentistry?
It's okay to feel anxious when visiting the dentist. Many patients experience nerves before and during a dental treatment, from check-ups to cleanings to dental procedures. While dental phobia is a common and significant issue for many anxious patients, dental sedation is a great way to receive the necessary care, without the nerves. When you visit Smiles at Fleetwood, sedation dentistry is available to help you feel comfortable and relaxed while receiving professional dental care.
At our dental office, we offer oral sedation. A form of moderate sedation that allows us to provide excellent care without the fears. How does it work?
Oral sedation is typically administered in pill form about an hour before your procedure begins. This gives the sedative enough time to take effect, allowing you to feel relaxed and at ease during the entirety of your dental treatment. This type of oral sedation is designed to make you feel very calm, therefore falling asleep is very normal. While you won't feel any pain, you'll be still be alert enough to communicate with your dentist if needed. Once the dental procedures are complete, you'll be awoken with a gentle nudge, ready to take on the world with perfect oral health.
We offer comfortable sedation dentistry for our patients. Here's how you can prepare for your appointment:
For our sedation services to be successful, there are some pre- and post-sedation steps that must be followed:
Food & Beverages
When undergoing sedation, it's essential that your stomach is empty before your dental appointment. As such, do not eat any solid foods or consume alcohol or coffee within 6 hours of your appointment. If needed, fruit juice or a light meal of fruit is okay.
Medications
If you are prescribed medications, or are currently taking any over-the-counter drugs, it's crucial you discuss this with your dentist prior to your appointment. Otherwise, there could be harmful interactions between your medication and the sedative.
Clothing
Comfort is key. When you come in for sedation dentistry, wear loose, casual clothing such as a short sleeve t-shirt and comfortable pants.
Smoking
Prior to your appointment, refrain from smoking any substances beforehand. This can interfere with the medication and in some cases, increase anxiety.
Transportation
Under no circumstances are you permitted to drive yourself home after sedation dentistry. Even moderate sedation, such as oral administration, will have a temporary effect on your mental and physical state (for up to 24 hours). A trusted and responsible adult must pick you up and accompany you home following your appointment. Taxis, car shares, and public transportation are not recommended.
Health Status
Should you develop a health concern (e.g., cough, cold, fever, etc.) prior to your appointment, please call our office to discuss your options. For the safety of you, our staff, and our other patients, please inform us if you are feeling unwell.
Types of Dental Sedation
Oral Sedation
Administered in either pill or liquid form, oral sedation helps patients feel relaxed throughout their treatment. To ensure the medication takes full effect prior to the procedure, oral sedation will be given an hour in advance. Patients typically feel quite groggy and will oftentimes fall asleep, which is perfect for fast and painless dental procedures.
IV Sedation
This form of sedation dentistry is administered by direct injection into the bloodstream through a needle. Virtually painless, the sedative is adjusted throughout the dental treatment for optimal results. During the IV sedation, patients will feel very relaxed, oftentimes falling asleep completely. Making the experience feel quick and pain-free.

Is Sedation Dentistry for You?
Throughout the years, we have provided many anxious patients the care they need to feel comfortable and safe throughout their treatment. As a family dentistry, we know there are several reasons why sedation is beneficial. For starters, sedation dentistry gives you the option to ease anxieties and phobias, helping you stay calm when receiving dental care. Secondly, moderate sedation reduces dental treatment difficulty, allowing your dentist to work faster and more efficiently. Lastly, patients who suffer from severe dental phobias tend to avoid the dentist altogether. This can lead to severe oral health issues that are more painful, expensive, and difficult to treat. Overall, sedation dentistry allows you to receive the care you need, without the fear.
There are many effective sedation options for patients who experience anxiety before their dental appointment. If you experience any of the following, please feel free to book an initial consultation to see if sedation dentistry is right for you.
"Sleep dentistry." How relaxing does that sound? Since fear is a huge reason why people avoid the dentist, we want to give you the option to prioritize your oral health, without the stress.
